Creating A Sustainable Wardrobe in New England

When learning how to shop sustainably,  your wardrobe is a great place to start.

Here are some tips from our professional wardrobe Stylists on how to analyze your current closet and shopping habits, and build a sustainable wardrobe:

1. Renew, Reuse & Recycle

It can be tempting to look at your closet and want to start from scratch. You don’t have to! Get creative and find looks with items that you already own.

Thrift or vintage shopping is a really great way to save money while reducing waste.

When you are ready to get rid of your old clothes, don’t throw them away. If none of your friends want them, sell them online, or donate them to a women’s or homeless shelter.

2. New is sometimes Necessary

Think of the last three times you purchased an article of clothing. Did you really need that item? (The answer might be yes and that’s okay!) We’ve gotten ourselves into the habit of thinking we need a new item, when in reality we actually don’t.

A crucial part of shopping consciously is learning how to establish a habit of shopping out of necessity. Let’s break the “I have nothing to wear” cycle! Capsule wardrobes are perfect for this; by focusing on simplistic, universal pieces that you can dress up or down.

3. Invest in Quality

When you place value in quality over quantity, you’ll start investing in better made products that last longer, can be repaired, and are more timeless. You can even save money in the long run.

4. Buy Off-Season

Buying ‘off season’ gives you something to look forward to next year!

For example, buying heavy sweaters in March, while you might not get much use out of them at the time, they are cheaper.
