Holiday Party Attire for Men

The holiday season is, without a doubt, the best time of the year to step up your look and add personality to your outfits. There are even occasions that require you to decipher the dress code; like dinners with family, cocktail parties and the elusive office holiday party. We’ve got your back and make dress code guesswork one less thing to handle over the holidays. Our professional Stylists’ cover what to wear—from corporate cocktails and beyond.

Open House

This casual pop-in style party calls for mixing casual and put-together attire.  A simple sweater or pullover paired with denim or dark chino is a comfortable and easy choice. The way to keep it sophisticated is with a nicer pair of shoes or dressy sneaker. Faire Isle sweaters are all the rage so try this vertical version. Or stick with a cleaner look with a cashmere blend sweater in a solid color, like navy, forest green or deep red. Feel free to show your festive side with a pair of fun checked cords or plaid chinos! Too much? Go tamer with a burgundy chino instead.

Cocktails

A cocktail party requires a step up in your look whether it’s a home party or out on the town.  Remember, a cocktail party invitation is different than the dress code term “Cocktail Attire” which has specific dressing parameters. It is also not just beers-with-the-boys since they opted into the name! For a cocktail party, a stepped up look is expected (and may be appreciated by your partner!)

Gauge your level of dress on the cues from your host in the invitation and venue. A great jacket paired with a button down or any clean pullover is a great choice. Stay away from denim but feel free to mix it up by wearing casual chino with your blazer and button down or do the opposite and wear a dress pant with a pullover and jacket. If you love ties go ahead and wear one, but keep your other pieces less formal. Stick with a great shoe for this look — no sneakers or snow boots.

The idea is to create a dressed up look that does not look like you are headed to the office. Choose pieces from your closet that have a less business feel —which means no pinstripes or classic ties. Now is the time to try that dot shirt or plaid pant!

Office Party

The eternal question at holiday time! These days many office parties take place at the end of the workday simplifying your choices. Yet adding an element of “special” to your look on party day may show your support of the company culture and your ability to be a team player.

Take your cues from the invitation to elevate your attire by adding an extra pop of color to your usual monochrome look. This means with an extra layer, a festive tie or blazer, and some smart kicks. Dark blue, deep burgundy, or neutral suede shoes are easy to pair and add a bit of interest to your look. A sweater can add color and provides a relaxed look for a casual office party — we love a deep forest hue this season. Most importantly it’s still an office party so keep your look put together and appropriate.
