How to Wear Black in the Summer

Summer style is synonymous with bright colors, an abundance of white, joyful prints and delicate sundresses. But what do you wear if your preferred summer wardrobe is comprised of “summer black” versus “fall black?” As one who falls into the summer black category, I struggle every year as the weather turns warmer to find clothing that doesn’t make me look like I’m the only one going to a funeral.

How fortunate for me that black is actually a summer trend right now! Witness my style-hero Victoria Beckham in a head-to-toe classic of her own design that she posted on her Instagram account.

And as if prompted on cue, my daughter remarked the other day how summery I look. I am wearing, for the record, a black spaghetti strap jumpsuit with black YSL rope wedge sandals. “You think this looks summery?” I asked her in disbelief. (I mean, I knew it was summer black, but how did SHE know?) She responded that the shape is a very summery shape, regardless of the color.

Therein lies the easiest way to wear black in the summer- choose a summery silhouette. Any warm weather shapes and styles can be created and worn in black and still maintain the seasonal gist. Along with the jumpsuit, and Victoria’s all-in-one dressing, hot seasonal shapes include rompers, slip dresses, minis, maxis, crops and cutouts.

Fabric also plays an obvious role. Warmer days call for linen and cotton, and breathable blends. Any of these fabrics in black can exude both simplicity and elegance.

If however, you’d like to venture out of your black comfort zone, there are still many options that will feel safe, yet equally striking. Tonal neutrals are a simple, yet chic counterpoint - white mixed with cream or various shades of head to toe beige, khaki or tan. There is a certain elegance to these non-colors, that are equally as simple to put together as your favorite black ensemble AND might be slightly less conspicuous among the pastel florals, and summery hues.

Navy is another versatile option that transitions well from cooler to warmer temps, and also for work and play. Mixed with a lighter neutral or a pop of color, dark and traditionally cold weather shades become perfect for those warmer days.

Bottom line, as always, is wear what you love. Wear what makes you feel good. And if that happens to be all black in the summer? Rock it.
