The Secret to Finding the Perfect Pair of Jeans
The difference between ill-fitting jeans and those that make you feel in”jean”ious always lies in the fit. With the right approach, finding your perfect pair can be easy and even kind of fun. When you hit the stores, remember these 6 steps to find the best looking pair of jeans you’ll ever wear:
1. Start with the Denim Fabric
All denim isn’t created equal. The type of fabric you choose will determine how your jeans feel, how they stretch, and how long they last.
Premium denim has a tight weave, meaning it has more structure, and the less the second-day sag will show up.
Non-stretch denim is stiff initially but molds perfectly to your body over time. This is a great option if you want structure and a vintage look.
Stretch denim is soft, flexible, and ideal for daily wear. It hugs your curves but still holds its shape when well-made.
Lightweight denim is soft and breathable, perfect for warmer weather. Just know, it may lose its shape faster.
2. Choose the Right Rise
Rise is how high the jeans sit on your waist, and it can change how they look and feel. Your rise should match your comfort and style preference.
High-rise: Hits at or above your belly button. Great for tummy control, staying in place and a long-leg look. (Try 9″ or more!)
Mid-rise: sits just below the navel. Classic and comfortable for everyday wear.
Low-rise: rests on your hips. Trendy, but may cause gapping at the back.
Quick tip: Measure the rise of the jeans you already love and look for something similar. Shop below!
3. Choose the Right Leg Shape
Your lifestyle and body shape should help guide your pick.
Skinny: Tight from hip to ankle. Great with boots, oversized tops, or layered looks.
Straight: Clean and simple. Works on almost everyone and goes with any shoe.
Bootcut/Flare: Adds balance to curves and elongates legs, especially with heels.
Wide-leg: Comfy, modern, and ideal for a relaxed or structured look.
Tip: A flared hem works well for most bodies to balance out wider hips. Check out some of our favorites!
4. Look at the Pockets
Placement of back pockets matters and can totally change how jeans flatter you. The farther apart the pockets are, the wider they make your behind look.
High, small pockets give a lifted look.
Low, wide pockets can flatten your shape.
Curved or angled pockets add roundness and shape.
Always look at pocket placement because it can make or break the fit.
5. Pick a Wash That Works for You
The wash sets the tone of the jeans, making them appear casual, polished, or laid-back.
Dark wash: Sleek and slimming. Easy to dress up.
Medium wash: Everyday classic that goes with anything.
Light wash: Casual and relaxed, great for warm weather.
Distressed/faded: Adds edge, but can wear out faster.
When in doubt, start with a medium or dark wash. They're the easiest to style and wear anywhere.
6. Length Matters More Than You Think
Inseam length can change how your jeans look, especially on your legs.
Longer lengths create the illusion of longer legs, especially with straight or flared styles.
Cropped cuts can be super flattering, but they can visually shorten your frame. This cut works best if you’re petite or styling with low-profile shoes.
Too much bunching at the ankle can make even great jeans look a little sloppy, so always check the inseam.
Tip: The longer the length, the longer your legs will look. If you're between sizes, try a slightly longer pair and wear them with a heel or platform for extra length. Shop different lengths below.
